Türkiye* and Syria Earthquake

On February 6th, 2023 a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked south-eastern Türkiye, near the Syrian border, killing more than 48,000 and impacting more than 23 million people in the region. One of the hardest hit regions in Syria is in the north of the country where millions have already been enduring the hardships of the ongoing civil war, including families in refugee camps on both sides of the Syria-Türkiye border.

To respond to the needs of our neighbors, New Life Fellowship will be partnering with World Renew, which is a Christian nonprofit organization that works to provide emergency relief and long term care support for the most vulnerable populations around the globe. They have been working in Syria for the past 12 years providing care and relief to the refugees affected by war. Our donations will initially go to provide emergency supplies and shelters for the victims with the hope of creating long term care solutions for those who have been affected by this tragedy.

How you can support

  1. PRAY

    • Pray for the survivors and families who have been affected by the earthquake, that they will be comforted and cared for in the way they need.

    • Pray for the leaders, medical workers, relief and humanitarian workers, that can best assess and care for those affected; and be wise and efficient in executing their plans.

    • Pray for churches and missionaries in the region that they will be able to be salt and light to the people of Türkiye* and Syria and for the gospel to advance to our Muslim brothers and sisters in the region.

  2. GIVE

    • Donate towards earthquake relief through World Renew on our giving page or through Vemno (@New-Life, comment: Earthquake Relief)

** New Life will match all donations up to $10,000 (until Easter Sunday, April 9th)**

FAQ

  • World Renew is a reputable nonprofit organization that has working in Northern Syria where the earthquake hit. Because they have been working in Syria for the last 12 years, they have connections and developed partnerships with local communities so that aid and support can be provided quickly and as needed. Also, given that the organization is smaller than major nonprofits (like Red Cross or World Vision), their operations costs are much lower so that more of our donations will go to support the people who are affected.

Lastly, World Renew is committed to staying in Syria for the long haul as they have a vision to help communities realize long-term goals that equip them to function better than before and to endure long after the response work is done.

  • The earthquake has affected both Türkiye and Syria (Türkiye, more than 38,044 people have been killed and 80,000 injured and in Syria, at least 5,800 people were killed and 8,500 injured). But currently most of the world relief efforts have been focused on Türkiye as Syria is harder to reach due to ongoing civil war. As a result, the the rebel controlled areas in Syria (where the earthquake has hit) have not been able to receive adequate humanitarian aid. The people in Syria were already suffering from the effects of war and are among the most vulnerable, so we wanted to partner with World Renew as they care for the most vulnerable population.
